I have worked as a journalist for 25 years, covering politics, business, and culture. I began my career in Paris, at what was then the International Herald Tribune, and spent eight years in Moscow covering Vladimir Putin’s consolidation of power, including as the Moscow bureau chief for The Guardian. After returning to New York in 2013, I built and oversaw the foreign desk at BuzzFeed News, covered Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and the onset of the COVID pandemic, and worked as an executive editor at Vanity Fair, where I led The Hive. I continue to write about US politics, Russia, and culture and have been published in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, and others. I’ve appeared on various podcasts, radio, and TV shows, including NPR, CNN, and MSNBC. In 2023, I was awarded the Council on Foreign Relations’ Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship.

In addition to writing, reporting, and news editing, I have worked as a freelance editor on a number of well-received books on subjects ranging from politics to tech to history.
